The Trench Digger - How To Get A Job Requiring Experience When You Have None

I got these stories from my friend who had emailed it to me. After reading the stories, it got me thinking, "Why am I not sharing this to others? These stories have values that we could learn from. So here it goes.

The Trench Digger

This is adapted from (apparently) a true story. An elderly couple retired to the countryside - to a small isolated cottage overlooking some rugged and rocky heathland. One early morning the woman saw from her window a young man dressed in working clothes walking on the heath, about a hundred yards away. He was carrying a spade and a small case, and he disappeared from view behind a copse of trees.

The woman thought no more about it but around the same time the next day she saw the man again, carrying his spade and a small case, and again he disappeared behind the copse.

The woman mentioned this to her husband, who said he was probably a farmer or gamekeeper setting traps, or performing some other country practice that would be perfectly normal, and so not to worry.

However after several more sightings of the young man with the spade over the next two weeks the woman persuaded her husband to take a stroll - early, before the man tended to arrive - to the copse of trees to investigate what he was doing.

There they found a surprisingly long and deep trench, rough and uneven at one end, becoming much neater and tidier towards the other end.

"How strange," the old lady said, "Why dig a trench here - and in such difficult rocky ground?" and her husband agreed.

Just then the young man appeared - earlier than his usual time.

"You're early," said the old woman, making light of their obvious curiosity, "We wondered what you were doing - and we also wondered what was in the case."

"I'm digging a trench," said the man, who continued, realising a bigger explanation was appropriate, "I'm actually learning how to dig a good trench, because the job I'm being interviewed for later today says that experience is essential - so I'm getting the experience. And the case - it's got my lunch in it."

He got the job. (Adapted from a suggestion - thanks R Columbo)

Double-Positive Story

On hearing one of his students use the expression, "I don't know nothing about it..." a teacher took the opportunity to explain about double negatives and correct grammar to the class.

The teacher explained, "In the English language a double negative makes the statement positive, so your assertion that you 'don't know nothing about it' is actually an admission that you do know something about it."

Encouraged by the interest in this revelation among certain class members, the teacher went on to demonstrate more of his knowledge of world languages: "Of course not all languages operate according to the same grammatical rules, for example, in Russian, a double negative remains negative, although perhaps surprisingly, there is not a single language anywhere in the world in which a double positive makes a negative.."

At which a voice from the back of the classroom called out ironically "Yeah, right.."

How to install Android ICS 4.04 to your Lenovo A1

My niece got a Lenovo Ideapad A1 as a gift last February 2012 but then, the machine was unstable as it keeps on rebooting by itself in random. My niece then after a month of usage did not bother to use it as she prefers to used her laptop than her tablet. She says that the tablet was unstable and it annoys her when the tablet reboots by itself when she is using it. Likewise, the buttons at the bottom of the tablet (ie. Menu, Home and Back) were only lit for a short while before it goes off again. You are left then to try and guess which area are you going to press in order to go to previous page or back to Home screen.

I tried to search the internet for the solution on the above mentioned problem and I came across a possible solution wherein you could upgrade the OS of Lenovo Ideapad A1 from Android version 2.3.4 (Gingerbread) to Android Version 4.04 (Ice Cream Sandwich). I then tried to download the ICS1.2 zip file and begin the upgrading process as detailed on (http://gleescape.com) with finger's crossed. After the upgrade process, voila, I was able to upgrade the OS to ICS 4.04. hahaha... The problem of rebooting was resolved and the problem of finding the menu, Home and Back buttons was resolved by the newly installed OS. Shown below are the steps that you need to do to upgrade your Lenovo A1. You are adviced to backup all your data before proceeding to upgrade your tablet's OS.

Steps to upgrade the OS of Lenovo A1 from Version 2.3.4 (Gingerbread) to 4.04 (Ice Cream Sandwich)

1. Download the ICS1.2.zip file from here
Note: If the link above does not work, try to download the file here.

2. Rename the file from ICS1.2.zip to update.zip

3. Copy the update.zip to a micro-SD card. Turn off your ideapad first. Push your micro-SD card into your Lenovo Ideapad.

4. Hold the Volume down (-) button and at the same time, press the Power button.

5. The ideapad will turn on and going into the update mode.

6. Wait for the update to complete. You should see a green triange at the end with a tick (to signify a successful update).

7. When the updating is completed, turn on your device and your device will do the setup process, WAIT for the device to show the main screen of ICS OS.

8. Connect to your wireless network and perform a system update.

9. Go to Settings -> About Tablet -> System Update and click OK.

10. Your device will now search for the latest update and will ask you whether you want to install the update or not.. Choose to update.

11. Follow the update instruction. This will be the original update from Lenovo, which is good thing.

12. Congratulations, you now have an ICS-based tablet.

Note : Please proceed with caution and at your own risk. Please also ensure to backup all your data first.

Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, Shingles and Virgin Coconut Oil

My niece was diagnosed 3 years ago to have Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is the condition of having an abnormally low platelet count (thrombocytopenia) of unknown cause (idiopathic). Her platelet count drops whenever her immune system weakens. Whenever her platelet counts drop to around 10,000 level, she would always be rushed to hospital. Her doctor's prescribed steroids in order to boost her immune system and could help to increase her platelet counts. In 2 or 3 weeks time, her platelet count increases. But 2 or 3 months after, her platelet count drops again. She has been suffering from this sickness since she was in 4th year high school. Now she's in her 2nd year university studies and she still suffers from this condition every now and then.

Last week, her platelet count drops to around 11,000 again. Her doctor gave her steroids again. I adviced her to take Virgin Coconut Oil as I believe this oil could possibly help her to strengthen her immune system. I have read about the researched done by some doctors about using the VCO in treating patients with HIV and I believe, it could help my niece. So I have asked her to take 1 tablespoon of VCO in the morning and 1 tablespoon at night. My niece doesn't want to take it because she said that the taste of oil is yucky. But I insist that she try it. Yesterday, she went for a checkup again and with God's grace, her platelet count shoots up to 110,000 level. It's really a blessing and proven to be effective. Within 1 week of taking her VCO, her platelet count shoots up by more than 100,000. She sent an email to me this morning thanking me that my VCO works and that she's really very happy about it. I advice her to continue taking up VCO daily.

Now, I am a firm believer of the great health benefits of this Virgin Coconut Oil can give. I myself had benefitted from this VCO. I got shingles last October. The affected area of shingles on my body was somewhat painful and itchy. At first, I didn't know what was this red watery spot at my back and my sister-in-law said that it seems to be Shingles. I applied VCO to the affected area and immediately, I feel relief from pain and itchiness. I applied VCO daily on my back (affected area) and after 7 days, the shingles disappeared.

I am now an avid user of VCO.

Share your Internet Connection using Virtual Router

I just found a very good software that can be used for sharing any internet connection. The software is Virtual Router and is a free, open source, software based router to be used for PC's running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. By using this Virtual Router, you can wirelessly share any internet connection such as Wifi, LAN, Cable Modem, Cellular, etc with any wifi enabled device such as your laptop, smartphones, iphone, wireless printer, etc These wifi enabled devices connect to Virtual Router just like any other access point and the connection uses Wifi Protected Access II (WPA2) encryption and should be quite secured.

For more information about this software, you may visit this link http://virtualrouter.codeplex.com/
